CV Prof. Dr. Ioana Gouni-Berthold

Professor Dr. Ioanna Gouni-Berthold was born in Athens, Greece and studied medicine at the Aristotelian University, Thessaloniki, Greece, where she graduated as a valedictorian. Thereafter, she moved to the United States where she got her training in Internal Medicine as well as in Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism at, among others, Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts, Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and at Harvard Medical School in Boston. She became an Internist in 1989 getting her certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine

In 1993 she became an Endocrinologist and Diabetologist, certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. During her years in the United States Prof. Gouni-Berthold worked scientifically at, among others, the Department of Cell Biology, Baylor College of Medicine, under the direction of Professor Lawrence Chan, M.D. There, she completed also her doctoral thesis with the title “Effect of the beta-blocker propranolol on the expression of the lipoprotein lipase gene”. Thereafter, she moved to Bonn, Germany and worked at the Medical Policlinic of the University of Bonn.

She got the certification of “Fachärztin für Innere Medizin” in 1997 and the “Teilgebietsbezeichnung Endokrinologie” in 1998.

In 1999 she received the “Lise-Meitner-Stipendium des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen” and got her Habilitation for Internal Medicine at the Medical Faculty of the University of Bonn in 2001 based on her work entitled “Effects of thiazolidinediones and free fatty acids on the growth of vascular smooth muscle cells: role of mitogen-activated protein kinases”.

Since 2002 she works at the Department of Internal Medicine II of the University of Cologne, since 2005 as an attending physician.

In 2007 she became Professor of Medicine at the University of Cologne (Außerplanmäßige Professorin).

The research work of Prof. Gouni-Berthold and her team combines translational research (focus on the effects and mechanisms of action of lipid-lowering medications) and basic research (focus on genetic association studies relating to cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus). Furthermore, Prof. Gouni-Berthold does research in epidemiology, working on issues of quality of care as well as on gender issues.
Prof. Gouni-Berthold is a member of various national and international medical associations and committees, a reviewer for many scientific journals and sits on the editorial boards of various international journals.
